Dear Alumni and Friends,
On May 9, Ohio State will host an in-person graduation ceremony, and the School of Environment and Natural Resources will recognize over 120 graduates. The ceremony will be more modest in scale than a typical spring graduation, but it is a great sign of progress that we are able to have any sort of event at Ohio Stadium. We wish our graduates the best of luck. They have managed some challenging circumstances, and I anticipate the resilience learned over these past 14 months will serve them well into their futures.

Today I also want to share with you some great resources we’ve compiled related to monarch butterfly conservation as an outgrowth of SENR’s Environmental Professionals Network Earth Day event. We’ve housed this material online under the title “Continue the Flight!” The website provides several great videos and resources for public consumption, including an inspiring presentation by Doug Tallamy (New York Times best-selling author of Nature’s Best Hope and other titles) and a talk by Ohio State’s very own Gabe Karns on what you can do to support monarch conservation.
Continue the Flight! also promotes the amazing work of a team of graduating seniors, led by Katie Fackler (majoring in environmental science), who put together some additional materials related to monarch conservation. This work was done as the final project in the SENR capstone course taught by Dr. Alia Dietsch and is featured on this page of Continue the Flight! The project includes an ArcGIS StoryMap with informative resources for promoting monarch conservation. In addition to the StoryMap, the students led all aspects of the production of a video, including the interviews, in collaboration with a professional videographer. I think you will be impressed with the quality of these materials, and I’m so delighted that this student work is part of the portfolio of content we are able to circulate related to this important conservation topic.
Please feel free to share these resources widely. I think this content can provide inspiration to individuals of all ages. It’s inspired me, and I hope it will inspire you too.
Sincerely,
